Event Production & AV Glossary
Event production is the coordinated discipline of planning, designing, and executing live experiences — from corporate conferences and brand activations to concerts, weddings, and private celebrations. It brings together audio engineering, lighting design, video and LED wall technology, staging, power distribution, and technical direction under a single production plan. The vocabulary of live event production is dense and technical. Terms like line array, pixel pitch, DMX control, and P1.6 LED get thrown around in proposals and site surveys, and understanding them is the difference between signing for the right equipment and paying for the wrong one. This glossary defines the core concepts that event planners, marketers, and producers encounter when scoping AV and production services. Whether you are comparing in-house venue AV against an independent production company, evaluating LED wall pixel pitch for an intimate ballroom, or planning temporary power for a raw warehouse activation, the definitions below clarify what each term means and why it matters to your event's outcome. Use it as a reference when reviewing quotes, walking venues, and aligning your creative team with your technical team — clear terminology leads to clearer scopes, fewer surprises on show day, and productions that land exactly as intended.
Audio
Front of House (FOH)
The mix position and operator facing the audience. FOH engineers balance what the crowd hears in real time, adjusting levels, EQ, and effects as the room and performance change.
Related: Audio ProductionLine Array
A vertically arranged speaker system engineered to deliver even, intelligible sound coverage across large venues. Line arrays control vertical dispersion so the audience hears consistent volume and clarity from the front row to the back of the room.

DMX Control
The digital protocol used to command theatrical lighting fixtures. DMX lets a single console dim, color-shift, move, and sequence hundreds of fixtures in perfect sync with music or a run-of-show.

Pixel Pitch
The distance in millimeters between individual LEDs on a wall panel. Smaller pitch (e.g. P1.6) produces a sharper image readable at close range; larger pitch (e.g. P3.9) suits arenas where viewers stand far back. Matching pitch to viewing distance is what keeps an LED wall crisp, not blurry.

Rigging
The hardware and engineering that safely suspend lighting, audio, and video equipment overhead. Proper rigging requires load calculations, certified hardware, and venue-approved rig points.

Run of Show
The minute-by-minute schedule that maps every cue, speaker, video playback, lighting change, and audio transition across an event. A disciplined run of show is what makes a complex production feel effortless to the audience.
